Dear Readers: Here is an update to the Macintosh Models List (AKA Mac Facts II). About this file: This is the Macintosh Models List (AKA Mac Facts II). It is a list of all the Apple Macintosh models, past, present, and future. The list provides as much information on each model that can fit on two lines. Model List III has been removed since it was years out of date and not based on the current Speedometer standard. I welcome anyone to take over speed ratings. Two column format: There are two tables per model so that each model has two lines of information. Note that I still stick to the 80 column wide format for easy viewing on terminal screens. You may choose to print it out on Unix using enscript -2rl or format it in a word processor as two columns so that the lines match up. Please email any corrections or additions to jdsb@ee.duke.edu. Also please let me know if you want to be removed from the mailing list. The original purpose of this reference sheet was to get as much information as possible about each model that would fit on one line. This list now uses two lines per model by using two tables. This list is best printed out in two column landscape where each models entries line up or printed on Unix machines using enscript -2rl. A Ctrl-L indicates form feed. On the mac you can use SaveATree 1.52 to get two pages on one and have it line up right. NOTE: The type of 'R' is a Rumored future model. Those specs are VERY tenative! Quadras have amplified stereo (i.e. sound passes through a 4 W amp) DTS Q&A stack on the built in speaker: Only the SE/30, IIsi, Centris, and Quadra models currently combine the two stereo channels into one for playback for the internal speaker. All others use just the left channel. No doubt new machines were released since this was written. I don't know what the situation is relative to the Powerbooks. All models >= Mac Plus can run the current system version. Product Life span: The dates the model was available from Apple. Case: The style of casing the computer is in. ---------- Footnotes: ---------- 0. All new macintosh models use the manual inject floppy drive. Auto Inject Floppy: In older machines, an auto-inject floppy would pull the disk into the drive when it was partially inserted. This drive does not have a visible dust flap over the opening. Manual Inject Floppy: This drive does not assist with disk insertion. Instead you must push the disk all the way in, so these models have a depression around the floppy slot to allow you to push deeper. The dust cover should prolong the lives of the floppy drive. Most users will not notice a difference in insertion-force required with the new drives. These drives are cheaper for Apple since they are made for other manufacturers as well. 1. Low Cost Modular Mac: IDE Disk Drive, Chameleon case, special slots: LC PDS (no IIe emulation card), Communication (Ethernet or modem), Video (for A/V input $149, A/V/TV $249, or presentation card $299). IR Port for TV remote (possible future 2 way IR to communicate with Newton.) 8 bit sound output from computer. 16 bit sound output from CDROM audio. Quadra model: 4 Mb RAM, 250-350 MB HD, CDROM optional LC Model: 4/250 $1272 8/250 $1545 Australia's LC630 8/350CD has full 68040 Performa models 630 to 638 vary by 4-8 mb RAM, 250 MB HD, CDROM, Video In. 2. LC 475, Performa 475, Performa 475: LC Case Quadra 605: Thin case, no removable bay. Outside US, Q605 may have an FPU. 3. LC520,LC550: Built in 14" Macintosh Color Display (69 dpi), internal mike, external mike input (no mike provided). Dual Speakers (stereo), Power on from keyboard (soft power), Energy Saving Mode. All but low end LC550 has Apple 300 CDROM. LC575: 33-MHz 68LC040, has a communications slot which can accept either an Apple Ethernet card (Adding Ethernet while LC slot free) or an internal Express modem. It uses the LC 475's System enabler (Enabler 065). 4. IIvi: Not available in the US 5. IIvx: CPU runs at 32Mhz, rest of the system board runs at 16Mhz 6. IIvi,P600,IIvx: Model comparison: IIvi : 16 MHz Processor, no cache, 16 MHz system bus speed, 32 bit bus P600 : 32 MHz Processor, no cache, 16 MHz system bus speed, 32 bit bus IIvx : 32 MHz Processor, 32K cache, 16 MHz system bus speed, 32 bit bus IIvx vs IIci: IIvx is slower except on video, since IIvx uses VRAM. 7. Centris 610, Centris 660AV, Quadra 610, Quadra 660AV, PM6100/60, PM6100/DOS: - No automatic shutdown. Manual shutdown is necessary from front switch. - Front power switch may be mistaken for floppy eject switch by new user. - Power off without shutdown could be bad for HD data integrity. Centris 610, Quadra 605, Quadra 610 (8/160 model only): - No full 68040 with FPU offered by Apple. However, CPU is socketed and a full 68040 with FPU will run OK at 20 Mhz without heat sink. Quadra 610/8/160: Apple model number M2319LL/A has an LC040 (No FPU). Apple model number M2372LL/A has a full 040 with FPU (Not avail. in US). 8. Centris 650: Automatic shutdown available. Original low end model lacked FPU and Ethernet and had only 4 Mb soldered. 9. Centris 660AV, Quadra 660AV, Quadra 840AV Specifications: Built-in digital video (4 jacks: In/out composite, In/out S-video) - in/out 16-bit color, NTSC, PAL, SECAM input (out with adapter) or S-video. 32-bit digital signal processor (AT&T 3210 DSP, for voice recognition/synthesis and 16-bit sound in/out at up to 48kHz sampling). Faster DMA bus architecture and a high-speed serial port ("GeoPort", which can use the DSP to emulate a 14.4 Kbps modem). They use 2Mb ROMs, which include Casper voice recognition. They come with Ethernet and offer optional CD-ROM drives and 500Mb hard drives. Note that if you get an AudioVision 14" Display for an AV or other mac, you should also receive an octopus like adapter to connect the monitor to the 3 or 4 connectors on the back of the computer. Early price lists (before 8/16/93) did not have this adapter listed for the AV machines. 10. Mac TV: Like a black LC520, CDROM, shows TV, PDS taken by TV hardware, 160 M HD, Audio and video in/outs, Only 20,000 will be made so limited availability, 32 bit data bus, 32 MHz processor, but 16 MHz board, TV remote 11. Why is the Quadra 800 slightly faster than the Quadra 950 ? Three main reasons: 1) The Q800 has 120 ns ROMs while the Q950 has 150 ns ROMs 2) The Q800 uses 60 ns DRAM and has interleaved memory while the Q950 uses 80 ns DRAM and has non-interleaved memory 3) The Q800 has a newer, higher performance memory controller However, the Q950 has 24 bit graphics instead of the Q800's 16 bit. 12. PowerMac's: Expect emulation to run at the speed of a 33 MHz 68030 to 25 MHz 68040 (Q610) depending on application. All have a geoport. PowerMac 6100-60/PDM : <$2000 with Keyboard and Monitor PowerMac 7100-66/BHA : high performance video, AV PDS card optional PowerMac 8100-80/Cold Fusion: 256 K Cache, 24 bit on 16" Screen high performance video, AV PDS card optional 13.
