In the last few months, the California Seismic Safety Commission has
completed a number of important reports on earthquake issues. They are:

 Northridge Earthquake-Turning Loss to Gain: In response to Governor
Wilson's Executive Order #W-78-94, the Seismic Safety Commission has
published this non-technical report on the adequacy of seismic building
standards, land use planning and lifeline policies during the Northridge
Earthquake and it contains 168 recommendations for state and local
governments. SSC 95-01, $30.00.

 Public Safety Issues from the Northridge Earthquake of January 17, 1994:
This is a summary of public policy issues-emergency services, medical
response, mutual aid, insurance, transportation, recovery, and economic.
SSC 95-03, $20.00.

 Northridge Earthquake, January 17, 1994-The Hospital Response, by Donald
H. Cheu, MD: This is an insider's view of how the acute health care
industry was affected by the Northridge earthquake and the effectiveness
of California's Alfred E. Alquist Hospital Seismic Safety Act. SSC 94-11,
$10.00.

 1995 Status of California's Unreinforced Masonry Buiding Law: This is a
summary of the efforts of California cities and counties to comply with
the state law that requires local governments to inventory URM buildings
and establish seismic risk reduction programs. 25,000 buildings were
affected by this law. So far only half have been retrofitted or their risk
otherwise reduced. SSC 95-05, $25.00.

 Provisional Commentary for Seismic Retrofit:  This report provides
practicing design professionals, facilities managers, and code enforcers
with a philosophical summary of seismic retrofit design issues, a short
history of past and current practices, and a discussion of the development
of new retrofit approaches with a focus on older concrete and infill wall
buildings. SSC 94-02, $15.00.

 A Compendium of Background Reports on the Northridge Earthquake (January
17, 1994) for Executive Order W-78-94: This document compiles 39 reports
that summarize California's existing seismic safety policies and practices
(for buildings, land use planning, geosciences, and dams, bridges, and
lifelines) and their effectiveness based on observations from the
Northridge Earthquake. SSC 94-08, $35.00.

 A Reconnaissance Report to the Seismic Safety Commission on the Hyogo-ken
Nanbu Earthquake (Heisei Nana Nen), the South Hyogo Prefecture Near Kobe,
Japan, January 17, 1995, by L. Thomas Tobin, Executive Director, Seismic
Safety Commission: This is a California public policy perspective on the
extensive losses and repurcussions of the Kobe earthquake. SSC 95-02,
$10.00.
