Compendium of Modern Instrumental Techniques
By Gardner Read
1993. 280 pages. 0313285128. 55.00
An important characteristic of contemporary art music has been the
use of conventional instruments in unconventional ways, achieving
effects undreamed of or thought impossible in the early twentieth
century. This compendium codifies these techniques, explains their
production and effects, cites representative scores, and provides
numerous example from an international selection of composers. Part
One considers techniques and procedures that apply to all instruments;
Part Two takes up idiomatic techniques with specific instruments in
all orchestral categories. This monumental survey is essential for any
music library or serious musician

WOMAD - A World of Music Arts and Dance - brings artists together from
all over the world in order to introduce a wider audience to the arts
of many different cultures.
WOMAD works in many different ways - at festivals, performance events,
through recorded releases and through educational projects - but our
aim always remains to excite and inform; and to make a wider audience
aware of the worth and potential of a multi-cultual society.
Since 1982 WOMAD has promoted artists at over forty festivals,
presenting music and dance from more than ninety different countries,
showing what can be gained when different cultures come together and
respond to each other's artistic expression.

I spent four years at a university doing mainly music stuff. I've included a couple of scores here. These files are for the Finale notation system,
on the Macintosh platform. Users of other platforms, I'll do what I can to get some PostScript files out here, stay tuned. For you Macintosh Finale-users,
these files were made with Finale 2.6.3, but Finale 3.0 should open them fine. Both pieces are formatted for printing on A4 paper, but will need to be blown up to A3 for performance.
Feel free to download, print, include in major subscription season, etc. etc. Any feedback, discussion, critique etc. is more than welcome.
The Chocolate Grinder is a recent piece of mine, for voice and untuned percussion.

About KKSFFM
About KKSF
KKSFFM, 103.7 FM, is that rare Bay Area radio station that talks softly and
carries a big audience.
Mixing adult contemporary, soft rock, contemporary jazz, and New Age music
much of it uncharted by the radio and record industries KKSF produces a
sound that is both soothing and stimulating, programming that flows evenly,
with minimal interruptions. Its announcers never talk over songs, and the
title and artist of each selection are anounced after every set of songs. The
station also maintains, through its programming and sponsorships, a strong
commitment to public service.
The format, that had been used with limited success only a couple of times
before in other parts of the country, KKSF is focused on jazz fusion, New Age
music, and

Orquesta Actualidad
Come dance with the Francos and Orquesta Actualidad!
The Franco Brothers, Carlos and Bismark, front an elevenpiece orchestra,
Orquesta Actualidad , playing contemporary Salsa dance music.
Born in Managua, Nicaragua, land of music and poetry, the brothers later
moved to California where they led rock and roll bands in their teens.
Their true voice has been found in Salsa and the Francos have shared
stages with such luminaries as Luis Enrique, Celia Cruz, and Willie Colon.
Their first CD, released in 1992,
climbed the upper levels of the Billboard charts.
A combination of formal music training plus their emotional feel for
the culture has produced a hot band playing th3e latest sounds in the
Salsa tradition. Back to the Home Page.

Faculty members are active and interactive. Courses often straddle
two departments; for example, a course on American women dramatists

I am a first year graduate student at the
Carnegie Mellon
School of Computer Science .
My favorite conserved physical quantity is angular
momentum , and I have a fondness for grain
elevators .
Some of my favorite bits of pop (and anti-pop) culture include:
* Indie-pop music Like Pavement and the
Magnetic Fields, along with the Yale bands like
Holiday and the dearly departed
Boba Fett. Nadine, the magazine that wishes it were a band is sometimes a good place
to find out about this sort of stuff. Two good (if somewhat dated)
samplers to get ahold of are the International Pop
Underground festival disc (on K records), and the
SpinArt One Last Kiss compilation.
* Techno music
I'm mostly interested in the ambient
stuff , but I like techno in
* Surrealist

In the Cradle with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Vaughn
All along this path I tread,
my heart betrays my weary head,
with nothing but my love to save,
from the cradle to the grave..." ---Eric Clapton
If you've ever wondered what god would like singing and playing some
excellent rock-tinged blues, then check out Eric Clapton when he rolls
into town in support of his latest release. In a sold-out show at the
U.S. Air Arena, Clapton entranced the crowd with his legendary guitar
work and vocals so passionate that it would've made the people he
covered proud.
Clapton has been known to have once said that he could never sing the
blues as well as a black person. Clearly, his In the Cradle album,
and the tour supporting it, indicate that comment

The most frequently asked question on EMUSIC-L and on rec.music.synth is
probably "What keyboard should I buy?"
Before you do anything else, indulge in some self-analysis of what you want
to do, how committed you are to doing it, and how much money you have to
spend on it. If you plan just to play your keyboard every once in a while for
fun, you will have a different set of requirements from someone who is looking
for the first piece of equipment along the road to establishing a professional
set of gear as the nucleus of a studio. Persons who are going to be performing
contemporary popular music or who wish to imitate traditional instruments will
probably find any number of keyboards which will fit their needs.

Jazz Singing
Here's your chance to own the most acclaimed jazz book of the '90s:
1992 paperback edition includes a revised, updated CD discography!
Autographed by the author (Will Friedwald)!
Here's what those in-the-know have to say:
"I had to call everybody I knew and tell them to get it."
- Tony Bennett
"It's not often that a critic manages to redefine an entire field,
but that's just what Will Friedwald accomplishes with Jazz Singing,
a survey of vocalists from Bessie Smith to Bobby McFerrin. If
music like Nat King Cole's or Peggy Lee's holds any charm for you,
then Friedwald's book will prove indispensible. There is simple no
better guide to the art of jazz singing."
- Entertainment Weekly
