Abstract:
Today's requirements for computational power are still not satisfied.
Supercomputers on the one hand achieve good performance figures for a
great variety of applications but are expensive to buy and maintain.
Multiprocessors like the Paragon XP/S are cheaper but require more
effort to port applications. As one consequence, much computational
power

Seven Division Directors sponsored a $950K GPE (General Purpose

of peak computational power. The funds have been granted, and a team,
headed by Mike Leuze, is in place to determine user needs and procure

Fx Project
The Fx project at Carnegie Mellon investigates the issues involved in
building and using parallelizing compilers. The goal is to eventually
make parallel computer systems as easy to use as today's workstations.
The cornerstone of the project is
Fx ,
a parallelizing Fortran compiler that runs on a number of parallel
systems, including the Intel Paragon, Alpha workstation clusters, the
IBM SP/2, the Cray T3D, and the Intel iWarp system.
Approach
Our basic research approach is to work with applications from
scientific, signal, and image processing, learn what it takes to run
these applications efficiently on parallel systems, and then
incorporate these ideas into a compiler. For example, when we were
looking at using Fx for real-time

Background of SP2 at ORNL
During FY 1994, the ORNL Executive Committee set aside
approximately $1M of capital funds to acquire a high
performance parallel system for ORNL researchers.
A 16 processor IBM SP2 was selected and delivered in
September 1994.
This system complements the Intel Paragon and Kendall Square systems that are in the Center for Computational Sciences (which
